Główny głos w Steel Panther ma Michael Starr. Tak naprawdę nazywa się Ralph Saenz. Urodzony 17 maja 1965 roku, w Chicago, w Illinois. Ma szwedzko-hiszpańkie korzenie, ale wychował się w Los Angeles, w Van Nuys. Ojciec był wykładowcą na uniwersytecie w Berkley. Istnieje plotka o tym, jakoby Starr miał doktorat, aczkolwiek nie, to było kłamstwo, aby otrzymać lokum (sam ostatnio się z tego faktu śmiał na IG).
Zaczynał jako wokalista coverowego zespołu
The Atomic Punk (1994 – 2008) przyjmując ksywę sceniczną David Lee Roth, gdzie
grał razem z Russem Parrishem, czyli późniejszym Satchelem. W roku 2000 razem z
Parrishem założył Metal Shop, późniejsze Metal Skool/Danger Kitty, a docelowo STEEL PANTHER.
Był również przez krótki czas wokalistą L.A.
Guns, nagrał nawet z nimi EP-kę „Wasted”. Śpiewał również w zespole 7%Solution
(Better
Late Than Never (Mitch Perry Album) (1998) oraz Long Gone.
Gościnnie jego wokal pojawia się w Fozzy – w numerze "Tonight"; Gus
G. – "Redemption" ; Ninja Sex
Party – "6969"; Nanowar of Steel – Uranus oraz soundtracku Peacemaker (w
coverze "Pumped Up Kicks").
Współpracował z Crashdïet – w "Powerline", oraz
ostatnio z Sophie Lloyd w "Runaway".
Miał również epizod filmowy – pamiętajcie scenę z
„Rock Star” przesłuchania do Steel Dragon? Przed głównym bohaterem ze studia
wychodzi właśnie nikt inny jak Ralph Saenz.
Niewatpliwie, Starr to postać charyzmatyczna. Długie, kręcone blond włosy przewiązane bandamą, nieudawana stylizacja na lata 80’ i umiejętności wokalne sprawiają, że jest niezastąpiony w Steel Panther. Prywatnie bardzo otwarty człowiek i doceniający fakt, że w jego wieku (i totalnie tego wieku po nim nie widać) nadal może robić to, co kocha. Zaskakujący jest fakt, iż w dobie, gdy kiedyś najlepsi tracą już swoje głosy, jego warsztat wokalny nadal się rozwija i słychać to z płyty na płytę. Michael Starr is the lead vocalist of Steel Panther.
His real name is Ralph Saenz. Born on May 17, 1965, in
Chicago, Illinois, he has Swedish-Spanish roots, but grew up in Van Nuys, Los
Angeles, California. His father was a university lecturer at Berkeley.
There's a rumor, that Starr has a Ph.D., although it was just a lie to get a
place to stay (he recently laughed about it on Instagram himself).
He started out as the lead vocalist of the cover band
The Atomic Punk (1994-2008) under the stage name of David Lee Roth, where he
played alongside Russ Parrish, later known as Satchel. In 2000, Starr and
Parrish founded Metal Shop, which later became Metal Skool/Danger Kitty, and
eventually - STEEL PANTHER.
Briefly, he was also the vocalist for L.A. Guns, and even recorded an EP "Wasted" with them. He also was a member of the band 7% Solution (Better Late Than Never (Mitch Perry Album) (1998) and Long Gone.
As a guest star, his vocals appear in Fozzy - in their
hit "Tonight"; Gus G. - "Redemption"; Ninja Sex Party
- "6969"; Nanowar of Steel - "Uranus" and the Peacemaker
soundtrack. He collaborated with Crashdïet on "Powerline" and
recently with Sophie Lloyd on "Runaway".
He also has a movie appearance - remember the scene
from "Rock Star" where the audition for Steel Dragon takes place? The
person walking out of the studio before the main character is none other than
Ralph Saenz.
Undoubtedly, Starr is a charismatic figure. His long,
curly blond hair, tied back with a bandana, the unmistakable 80’s style
and vocal skills make him irreplaceable in Steel Panther.
Privately, he's a very open person who appreciates the fact that at his age (and you wouldn't guess his age at all), he can still do what he loves. What's surprising is that in an era where even the best often lose their voices, his vocal skill continues to develop, and it's getting more noticeable from album to album. Moreover, fans with a special private subscription to his Instagram know, that Starr is working on his solo album.
