November 24th, 1970 is an an important day for the fairer sex; on this day Russ John Parrish, better known as Satchel, was born. We know him as the lead guitarist for comedic glam metal band Steel Panther.
In 1989, he graduated from the Guitar Institute of Technology at the
Musicians Institute in Hollywood, to become a guitar instructor immediately
after his graduation in the early 90's, playing with Bad Dog, Racer
X (with vocalist Jeff Martin), and with The Electric Fence - with Martin on
drums alternating between guitar and bass. When Paul Gilbert joined Mr. Big,
Parrish rented a room in Gilbert's house in Los Angeles and took care of the
place when Gilbert was on tour, while also recording demos at Gilbert's home
studio.
He worked closely with Gilbert, and he’s also an author of several Paul
Gilbert's songs. He played guitar in Jeff Pilson's War & Peace band, which
appeared on the "Time Capsule" album, a compilation of demos released
by Shrapnel Records. After the break-up of War & Peace, Parrish played in a
Thin Lizzy cover band, when Jeff Martin introduced him to Judas Priest singer
Rob Halford, resulting in Parrish joining Halford's band Fight, and recording
the album "War of Words," which I absolutely adore.
After leaving Fight, he joined Outta The Blue from Cleveland, a local glam metal band that closed their set with Racer X covers, which later became The Szuters. In 1995, Parrish played guitar for Kevin Gilbert's band, who toured promoting Gilbert's album 'Thud.' You can see him playing with Gilbert on the DVD and CD 'Welcome to Joytown - 'Thud Live at the Troubadour' released in 2009, which documents a concert with the band in 1995 at The Troubadour in Los Angeles.
In 1996, Parrish played guitar with Sebastian Bach on the song "Rock Bottom" on the album, which was a tribute to Ace Frehley, "Spacewalk (A Salute to Ace Frehley)". From 2002 to 2006, he also played guitar in the Van Halen tribute band with future Steel Panther bandmate Michael Starr (alias Ralph Saenz), known as The Atomic Punks. During that time, he was also in a Rush cover band called Moving Pictures with The Atomic Punks drummer Scott Patterson.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Parrish was the leader of his own
band, The Thornbirds, alongside future Steel Panther drummer Stix Zadinia, Jeff
Duncan, and occasional Steel Panther lyricist Dean Cameron. In 2000, Parrish
was also playing in various bands and performed in the play "Rockalypse
Now" written by Dean Cameron. At that time, he and Ralph Saenz formed the
glam metal cover band Metal Shop, playing covers under the names Rikki Ratchet
and Michael Diamond, and also appeared in a Discover Card commercial as the
"Danger Kitty," a fictional one-hit wonder that quickly goes bankrupt
and blows all their royalties.
In 2003, Metal Shop (now called Metal Skool) released their debut album
"Hole Patrol" and began incorporating original songs into their live
sets. At that time, the "classic" lineup of Steel Panther was
solidified, with Lexxi Foxx (real name Travis Haley) on bass and Stix Zadinia
on the drums. The names of Michael Diamond and Rikki Ratchet have later been
consecutively changed to Michael Starr and Satchel. Six years later, the
band changed their name to Steel Panther and released their first album under
this name, titled "Feel the Steel." They achieved worldwide success,
with a large fanbase and celebrity fans, and sold out arenas and festivals,
including Download Festival in the United Kingdom.
Steel Panther's concerts are, without a doubt, one of the brightest points, thanks to his signature Charvel guitars, as well as his playing style and feel. True to the band's "comedy band" image, Satchel is an incredibly articulate speaker and is a witty conversationalist, which often leaves the interviewer in a state of confusion and bewilderment. Behind the scenes, Satchel is incredibly warm, friendly, as well as a great joker, an amazing musician; also incredibly open to conversations with fans. At the age of 54, he's still fueled by the music, and on stage, he transforms into a bundle of energy and testosterone.
